Short Description of Instrument |
Purpose: To identify toddlers 18-months of age who are at risk for autism.
Description: The CHAT is divided into two sections, with the first section consisting out of 9 items and being completed by the parent, and the second section consisting out of 5 items and being completed by the general practitioner. The second section was developed to validate the parent's response to the 9 parent items. There are five key items concerned with joint attention and pretend play, while the other items help distinguish between a diagnosis of autism and a more global diagnosis of developmental delay. Children failing all five key items are considered to be at greater risk for autism. Children can also fall into the medium risk group or low risk group for autism, depending on the answers on the key items.
Comment: The CHAT is intended to be used in a clinical setting with a low false positive but a high false negative rate.
Primary Dependent Measures: 5 key items Time Estimates: 5-10 minutes
